If you install lawns, this is the attachment that determines your results.
A power rake — commonly called a harley rake after the brand that popularized it — has a rotating drum with carbide teeth that breaks up clods, pulls rock and debris to the surface, levels the ground, and leaves a fine, consistent seedbed. In one pass it does what a crew with rakes does in an hour, and it does it more evenly.
Seed germination depends on seed-to-soil contact. Rough, cloddy ground gives you patchy results no matter how good the seed is. That's what this attachment solves.
What You'll Use It For
- Final seedbed preparation before seed or sod
- Breaking up compacted soil after construction traffic
- Removing rock and debris from the surface
- Leveling and grading soil to a fine finish
- Turf renovation and lawn repair
- Restoration after trenching, drainage, or utility work
- Food plot seedbed prep
- Athletic field renovation
- Preparing newly cleared ground where a disc won't work
- Working soil amendments into the top few inches
Rake vs. Disc vs. Tiller
Three tools people compare, and they do different things.
Power rake — works the top few inches, pulverizes clods, windrows rock and debris out, and leaves a finished surface. The finish tool.
Disc — cuts deeper, mixes soil, but bounces over hard ground and roots and leaves a rough surface. Better for large open fields; poor on newly cleared or rocky ground.
Tiller — mixes deeper than a rake, good for incorporating amendments into a bed, but doesn't level or remove debris.
On newly cleared ground full of roots and rock, a disc is close to useless and a rake works. That's why land managers and food plot builders end up with one.
How to Spec It
Width. Match to your machine and typical work area. Wider covers ground faster; narrower fits tighter spaces.
Drum and teeth. Carbide teeth are standard and they're consumables. Tooth count and pattern affect how fine a finish you get and how aggressively it pulls debris.
Angling. Hydraulic angling lets you windrow debris to one side and change direction from the seat. Manual angling means stopping to adjust. For production work, hydraulic is worth it.
End plates. Contain material and give a cleaner edge along the pass.
Roller. Some designs include a rear roller that firms the seedbed as you go — a real advantage because pressing seed into soil improves germination.
Direction of rotation. Some rakes reverse, which changes whether debris is pulled forward or pushed. Reversible is more versatile.
Flow requirement. Continuous-rotation drive with moderate to high demand.
Hydraulic HP = (GPM × PSI) ÷ 1,714
Which Models Run It
Flow is the constraint. Confirm the attachment requirement before ordering.
YJ1000 / YJ1100 / YJ1200 — the standard range on the 25 hp Kubota diesel platform.
YJ2000 / YJ3000 — wider rakes and sustained production work.

Harley Rake FAQ
Is it really better than hand raking?
Substantially, in both speed and consistency — and consistency is what shows in the finished lawn. On anything beyond a small area it's not a close comparison.
How deep does it work?
The top few inches. It's a surface preparation tool, not a tillage implement. For deeper mixing you want a tiller.
Will it remove rocks?
It brings rock and debris to the surface and, with angling, windrows it to one side for pickup. It won't remove large buried rock.
Can I use it on established turf?
For renovation and dethatching-type work, carefully and shallow. It will tear up turf if set aggressively — it's primarily a bare-soil tool.
How long do teeth last?
Carbide teeth are consumables. Life depends on soil abrasiveness and rock content. Sandy and rocky ground wears them faster.
Do I need hydraulic angling?
For occasional use, no. For production work where you're windrowing debris, it saves real time.
Will one from another brand fit?
If it's a universal mini skid mount and the flow matches.
Any maintenance?
Inspect and replace worn teeth, grease the drum bearings and pivots, check drive motor mounting hardware, and clear packed soil from the housing.
