Clearing snow and applying de-icer are two jobs, and doing them as two trips doubles your time on every property.
A spreader on the machine means one pass — clear, then spread on the way out, or run the spreader while a plow works the front. On a route with a dozen stops, that's a meaningful difference in how many sites you cover before the morning rush.
Application Matters More Than Equipment
Worth saying plainly, because over-application is common and expensive.
Salt works by lowering the freezing point, and its effectiveness drops sharply as temperature falls. Below a certain point — often cited around 15°F for rock salt — it stops working well regardless of how much you put down. Colder conditions call for treated salt, blends, or a different product entirely.
More salt is not better. Over-application wastes material, damages concrete, kills adjacent vegetation, corrodes vehicles, and runs into storm systems. Many jurisdictions have salt reduction programs, and some commercial contracts specify application rates.
Apply after clearing, not before. Salt on top of snow makes slush you then have to move. Salt on a cleared surface prevents bonding.
Sand doesn't melt anything — it provides traction only. It's the answer at temperatures where salt won't work, and it needs cleanup in spring.
What You'll Use It For
- De-icing sidewalks and pedestrian routes
- Building entrances and ADA ramps
- Parking areas and drives
- Loading docks
- Traction sand on steep or shaded areas
- Anti-icing application ahead of a forecast event
How to Spec It
Hopper capacity. Larger means fewer refills, but material is heavy — a full hopper of salt is a real load, and it sits behind or above the mounting plate. Balance capacity against machine capability and route length.
Spread width control. Adjustable width lets you narrow down for sidewalks and widen for lots. Essential if you do both.
Rate control. Variable rate from the seat is what lets you apply appropriately rather than dumping the same amount everywhere.
Material compatibility. Confirm what it handles — rock salt, treated salt, sand, salt/sand blends, and calcium or magnesium products all flow differently. Some spreaders handle bagged material better than damp bulk.
Flow requirement. Spinner and auger drive is moderate hydraulic demand.
Corrosion resistance. Salt is brutally hard on equipment. Stainless or heavily coated hoppers last dramatically longer than painted steel. This is worth paying for.
Which Models Run It
Moderate flow demand. Capacity matters because loaded hoppers are heavy.
YJ1000 / YJ1200 — the standard range for walk and drive work.
YJ2000 / YJ3000 — larger hoppers and longer routes.

Salt & Sand Spreader FAQ
How much salt should I apply?
Less than most people use. Rates depend on temperature, surface, and conditions — and many commercial contracts and municipal programs now specify them. Over-application damages concrete and vegetation and costs money.
At what temperature does salt stop working?
Effectiveness drops sharply as temperature falls; rock salt becomes impractical somewhere around the mid-teens Fahrenheit. Treated salt and alternative products extend the range. Sand for traction below that.
Salt or sand?
Salt melts; sand provides traction. Salt where temperatures allow, sand where they don't or where melt-refreeze is a concern. Sand requires spring cleanup.
Should I pre-treat before a storm?
Anti-icing ahead of an event prevents bonding and can reduce total material use. It's standard practice on many commercial routes, though it's wasted if the forecast misses.
Will it damage concrete?
Chloride de-icers can, especially on newer concrete — most guidance is to avoid salt on concrete less than a year old. Over-application accelerates damage on any concrete.
How do I keep it from corroding?
Rinse thoroughly after every use, inside and out, and store dry. Salt destroys equipment that isn't cleaned. Stainless construction helps considerably.
Will one from another brand fit?
If it's a universal mini skid mount and the flow matches.
