A soil conditioner and a harley rake do closely related work, and the names get used interchangeably across the industry. Some manufacturers distinguish them; many don't.
Broadly: both use a powered drum with teeth to break up soil, level the surface, and prepare a seedbed. Where designs differ, conditioners sometimes emphasize soil working and mixing while rakes emphasize debris removal and windrowing — but the overlap is substantial.
What You'll Use It For
- Seedbed preparation before seed or sod
- Breaking up compacted soil after construction traffic
- Leveling and smoothing graded areas
- Working amendments into the topsoil
- Turf renovation and lawn repair
- Restoration after trenching and utility work
- Food plot preparation
- Athletic field renovation
- Preparing newly cleared ground
Why It Matters for Seeding
Germination depends on seed-to-soil contact. Seed broadcast onto cloddy, rough ground sits in air pockets and germinates poorly, no matter what you paid for it.
A conditioner produces a fine, uniform, firm surface in one or two passes — the same result a crew with rakes takes an hour to approximate, and more consistently.
On newly cleared or construction-compacted ground, it also breaks up material a disc would simply bounce over.
How to Spec It
Width. Match machine and typical work area.
Teeth or tines. Carbide teeth are standard and consumable. Configuration affects finish fineness.
Angling. Hydraulic angling lets you windrow debris and adjust from the seat.
Roller. A rear roller firms the seedbed as you go, which improves germination on broadcast seed.
Rotation direction. Reversible designs change whether material is pulled forward or pushed, which affects debris handling.
Flow requirement. Continuous-rotation drive, moderate to high demand.
Hydraulic HP = (GPM × PSI) ÷ 1,714
Which Models Run It
Flow is the constraint. Confirm the attachment requirement before ordering.
YJ1000 / YJ1100 / YJ1200 — the standard range.
YJ2000 / YJ3000 — wider units and sustained production.

FAQ
Soil conditioner or harley rake?
Closely related, and the terms overlap heavily across the industry. Tell us what you're doing and we'll point you to the right tool rather than the right name.
How deep does it work?
The top few inches. It's surface preparation, not tillage. For deeper mixing you want a tiller.
Will it remove rocks?
It brings surface rock and debris up and, with angling, windrows it for pickup. Large buried rock stays buried.
Can I use it on established turf?
Shallow renovation work, carefully. It will tear turf if run aggressively — it's primarily a bare-soil tool.
How long do teeth last?
Consumables. Rocky and abrasive soil wears them faster.
Will one from another brand fit?
If it's a universal mini skid mount and the flow matches.
