Mini Skid Steer Tiller

Mix amendments deeper than a rake reaches. Tiller attachments for Yellow Jacket mini skid steers.

A tiller mixes. That's the distinction worth understanding, because a harley rake and a tiller look similar and do different jobs.

A rake works the top few inches, pulverizes clods, and pulls debris to the surface — surface preparation. A tiller cuts deeper and turns material through the soil profile, which is what you want when you're incorporating compost, lime, or fertilizer rather than just smoothing.

What You'll Use It For

  • Incorporating compost and soil amendments
  • Working lime and fertilizer into the profile
  • Preparing garden beds and planting areas
  • Breaking up compacted soil
  • Establishing new planting beds
  • Food plot preparation on established ground
  • Turning under cover crops
  • Preparing seedbeds where amendment mixing matters
  • Loosening soil around new plantings

Tiller vs. Harley Rake vs. Disc

Tiller — deepest mixing, turns material through the profile. Slowest, and it leaves a loose finish that usually wants firming before seeding.

Harley rake — surface work, levels and removes debris, leaves a proper seedbed. Faster.

Disc — cuts and mixes on open ground, but bounces over hard ground, roots, and rock. Better for large fields, poor on newly cleared or compacted ground.

Common sequence: till to incorporate amendments, then rake to level and finish. Many operations use both on the same job.

How to Spec It

Width. Match machine and typical work area.

Tilling depth. The key spec. Deeper mixing means more amendment incorporation but more power draw.

Tine configuration. Different tine shapes suit different soils — C-tines for general work, others for specific conditions.

Rotation direction. Forward rotation is standard. Reverse-rotation tillers pull soil back under the machine and generally produce a finer finish with less surface disturbance, at more power draw.

Depth control. Skids or a rear roller set consistent depth.

Flow requirement. Continuous-rotation drive with meaningful demand — tilling is sustained work.

Hydraulic HP = (GPM × PSI) ÷ 1,714

Which Models Run It

Flow and machine weight both matter — tilling generates significant resistance.

YJ1000 / YJ1100 / YJ1200 — the practical range on the 25 hp Kubota diesel platform.
YJ2000 / YJ3000 — wider tillers and deeper work.

FAQ

Tiller or harley rake?

Tiller to mix amendments into the soil. Rake to level and prepare a seedbed. If you're adding compost or lime, till. If you're smoothing graded ground for seed, rake.

How deep will it till?

Depends on the unit and the soil. Compacted and heavy soil reduces achievable depth.

Will it work in rocky soil?

It'll work, but rock is hard on tines and they're consumables. Heavily stony ground wears them quickly.

Can I till sod under?

It'll turn sod, though heavy established turf is difficult and may need multiple passes. Stripping is often faster.

Do I need to firm the soil after tilling?

Usually, before seeding. Tilled soil is loose, and seed planted into loose soil sits too deep after it settles. Roll or cultipack.

Will one from another brand fit?

If it's a universal mini skid mount and the flow matches.

Any maintenance?

Inspect and replace worn tines, grease the driveline and bearings, and clear packed soil from the housing after wet work.
