Mini Skid Steer Winch

Pull what you can't drive to. Winch attachments for Yellow Jacket mini skid steers, and the safety rules that matter.

A winch extends the machine's reach to places it can't drive.

Pulling a log section up a slope, recovering something from a ravine, dragging material out of a wet area, or moving a piece of equipment that won't roll — a winch does the work while the machine stays on ground it can hold.

For tree services and land managers working difficult terrain, it's the attachment that turns "we can't get to it" into "we can pull it out."

What You'll Use It For

  • Pulling log sections up slopes and out of ravines
  • Recovering material from wet or inaccessible ground
  • Dragging brush and debris to a pile or chipper
  • Pulling stumps and root balls in combination with cutting
  • Recovering stuck equipment
  • Positioning heavy objects where the machine can't reach
  • Pulling fence wire tight
  • Directional felling assistance for qualified operators
  • Moving material across ground the machine shouldn't drive on

Safety Is Most of This Page

Winch work stores enormous energy in the line, and failures are violent. This is genuinely among the more hazardous things you can do with a machine.

Never stand in line with the cable, ever. A failed line or a released load whips along the line's axis with lethal force. Nobody in the danger zone — including the operator's position if the line runs past it.

Use a line damper. A heavy blanket or purpose-made damper draped over the line absorbs energy if it fails. Standard practice in recovery work and it's not optional.

Inspect the line before every use. Frayed wire rope and damaged synthetic line fail without warning. Retire damaged line rather than getting one more pull out of it.

Rig to rated points. Shackles and slings must be rated and inspected. Never rig to something that isn't designed to take load.

Never exceed the rating. Line pull ratings assume good line and proper rigging. Double-line pulls with a snatch block reduce load and increase safety.

Watch for machine movement. If the load is heavier than the machine's grip, the machine moves toward the load rather than the load moving toward the machine. Anchor or reposition.

No shock loading. Take up slack slowly. A running start into a load multiplies force dramatically.

How to Spec It

Line pull rating. The primary spec. Rate for the heaviest routine pull with margin.

Line type. Wire rope is durable and abrasion-resistant. Synthetic rope is lighter, safer when it fails (less stored energy), and easier to handle — but more vulnerable to abrasion and UV.

Line length. Determines working reach.

Fairlead. Roller or hawse depending on line type.

Free-spool. Lets you pull line out by hand rather than powering it out. Saves considerable time.

Flow requirement. Hydraulic drive, moderate demand.

Which Models Run It

Machine weight matters as much as flow — the machine is the anchor.

YJ1000 / YJ1200 / YJ2000 — the practical range.
YJ3000 — heaviest pulls.

FAQ

How much can it pull?

Set by the line pull rating, but also by the machine's ability to stay put. A pull heavier than the machine's grip moves the machine instead.

Wire rope or synthetic?

Synthetic is lighter, easier to handle, and stores less energy when it fails — a real safety advantage. Wire rope resists abrasion better and costs less. Many operators prefer synthetic for the safety difference.

Can I use it to pull stumps?

In combination with cutting roots, yes. Don't shock-load it, and never stand in line.

Can I recover a stuck machine with it?

That's a common use, and it's also where people get hurt. Damper on the line, nobody in line with it, and rig to rated recovery points.

Do I need a snatch block?

For heavy pulls, yes — doubling the line halves the load on the winch and the rigging, and it lets you change pull direction.

What about felling?

Directional felling assistance is a legitimate use for qualified operators. If you're not trained in felling, this isn't where to learn.

Will one from another brand fit?

If it's a universal mini skid mount and the flow matches.
