Mini Skid Steers for Construction

Work inside framed structures and finished sites where a full-size machine can't go. Yellow Jacket mini skid steers for builders — Kubota diesel.

There's a point in every residential build where the big machine stops being useful. The foundation's in, the driveway's poured, the framing's up, and now every piece of material has to get to a place a compact track loader can't reach without tearing something up or not fitting at all.

That's the second half of the job, and it's where most builders are still moving material by hand. A mini skid steer works inside framed structures, crosses finished concrete without cracking it, gets through a standard doorway, and hauls debris out to the dumpster instead of a labor crew doing it in five-gallon buckets.

Yellow Jacket builds that machine on Kubota diesel power,

The Jobs You'll Actually Use It For

  • Backfilling and grading around foundations
  • Moving material across tight, built-out lots
  • Interior demolition on remodels and renovations
  • Hauling debris out and loading dumpsters
  • Moving pallets of block, brick, stone, and bagged material
  • Setting material inside framed structures
  • Breaking small slabs, footings, and stem walls
  • Digging small trenches for utilities and drains
  • Grading and prepping for walkways, patios, and driveways
  • Spreading gravel and stone
  • Site cleanup after each trade rolls off
  • Loading and unloading deliveries when there's no forklift on site
  • Moving equipment and gear around the job

Where It Beats the Big Machine

Not a replacement for a compact track loader or an excavator. A complement to both — and specifically the machine for the phases where those can't work.

It gets inside. Framed structures, garages, basements with walkout access, warehouses, and finished interiors on remodel work. That's a category of work that otherwise gets done entirely by hand.

It crosses finished work. New driveways, walkways, and slabs. Lower ground pressure and no ruts on the customer's concrete or the neighbor's lawn.

It doesn't need a lowboy. Transports on a tandem-axle trailer behind a 3/4-ton. Mobilization cost on a small job is a real number, and it's the reason a lot of punch-list work gets done by hand rather than by machine.

It's cheap enough to leave on site. At these prices, keeping a dedicated machine on a build rather than shuttling one machine between three jobs becomes a realistic decision.

Which Yellow Jacket Fits a Construction Crew

YJ1000 — the general-purpose build machine
25 hp Kubota diesel with enough lift to make forks useful on pallets and material handling. For most residential builders and remodelers, this is the right machine.

YJ1200 — wide track, more capacity
The wider undercarriage helps when you're carrying heavy loads at height across rough or uneven site conditions. Worth it on commercial work and heavier material handling.

YJ2000 — for heavy site work
50 hp Yanmar diesel. If you're running a breaker regularly, doing significant demo, or the machine is doing dirt work rather than material handling, the additional hydraulic capacity earns its keep.

Attachments That Earn Their Keep in Construction

Bucket — backfill, debris, gravel, dirt. Comes standard and does most of the work.
Pallet forks — block, brick, bagged material, lumber, deliveries. The attachment most builders buy first.
Hydraulic breaker — slabs, footings, stem walls, interior concrete. Check the attachment's minimum flow requirement against the machine's auxiliary output.
Grapple bucket — mixed demo debris. Loads a dumpster far better than a bucket does.
Trencher — utility runs, drain lines, footings for small structures.
Leveler — grading and prep work.

Yellow Jacket ships an industry-standard universal quick-attach plate as standard equipment, so attachments you already own — or rent locally — bolt on.

What It Replaces

Hand labor on material movement and cleanup. Site cleanup and debris handling is unbilled labor on most jobs. A machine turns it from a half-day into an hour.

Rental. Between the day rate and attachment charges, a builder running rentals across multiple jobs burns through purchase price fast — often in one or two seasons.

Mobilizing the big machine for small work. Bringing a CTL or excavator back to a site for punch-list grading or backfill costs mobilization plus the risk of damaging finished work.

Subbed-out demolition. Interior demo on remodels is high-margin work if you own the tool for it.

Waiting on a forklift or delivery truck. Being able to unload your own material on your own schedule is worth more than it looks like on paper.

Why Builders Choose Yellow Jacket

Kubota diesel torque. Loaded buckets on unimproved ground is the condition that separates diesel from gas.

Parts stocked in Ohio, shipped same-day. A machine down mid-build holds up trades and pushes your schedule.

Universal quick-attach standard. Your forks, your breaker, whatever brand.

Priced so it stays on the job. The economics of a dedicated machine per site only work if the machine isn't a six-figure asset.

Construction FAQ

Can I run it inside a building?

Physically, yes — that's a primary use case for remodel and interior demo work. The consideration with any internal combustion engine indoors is ventilation. Follow the operating manual's requirements, ensure adequate air exchange, and use CO monitoring for extended interior work. Many contractors run these machines inside routinely with proper ventilation, but it's a genuine safety item rather than a footnote.

Will it crack a finished slab or driveway?

Ground pressure on tracks is dramatically lower than on tires, and these machines are light relative to a CTL. Verify operating weight against the slab's design loading for any engineered floor, and be conscious of turning — counter-rotating on a finished surface can scuff. On typical residential concrete, crews run them without issue.

Will it fit through a standard doorway?

Measure your typical opening and call us. This is the spec that determines whether the machine can do interior work on your jobs, so it's worth confirming rather than guessing.

Can it load a dumpster?

Over the side of a standard construction dumpster, yes — the diesel models have the hinge pin height for it. Roll-off height varies by dumpster size, so check the spec against the containers you actually use. A grapple bucket loads mixed debris much better than a bucket.

Can it break concrete?

With a hydraulic breaker, yes — slabs, footings, and stem walls within reason. Thickness and reinforcement determine what's practical, and the attachment's minimum flow requirement determines whether it works well on a given machine. For heavy or thick structural concrete, you want a bigger machine.

Mini skid steer or compact track loader?

Different jobs. A CTL wins on production, dirt volume, and material size. A mini wins on access, interior work, finished surfaces, mobilization cost, and price. Most builders who own both use them at different phases of the same job. Mini Skid Steer vs. Compact Track Loader →
