Mini Skid Steers for Demolition & Junk Removal

Gut interiors and load dumpsters without a labor crew and buckets. Yellow Jacket mini skid steers for demo and junk removal.

Interior demolition is one of the last trades still done almost entirely by hand. A crew goes in with pry bars and hauls debris out in buckets and wheelbarrows, load after load, to a dumpster in the driveway.

There's a reason for that: a compact track loader doesn't fit through a doorway and would go through the floor if it did. So the work gets done by people, and the labor cost per square foot is enormous.

A mini skid steer is small enough to get inside and light enough to work on a slab. It pushes debris out instead of carrying it, and it loads the dumpster instead of the crew.

The Jobs You'll Actually Use It For

  • Interior demo — drywall, flooring, framing, cabinetry
  • Pushing debris out to a central pile or door
  • Loading dumpsters and roll-off containers
  • Breaking concrete slabs, footings, and stem walls
  • Removing sheds, decks, fences, and small outbuildings
  • Hoarding and estate cleanouts
  • Garage, basement, and attic clearouts
  • Loading dump trailers and box trucks
  • Sorting and separating scrap metal
  • Tearing out old patios, walks, and driveways
  • Removing landscaping, shrubs, and root balls
  • Post-fire and post-flood cleanout
  • Site cleanup and final sweep

Why It Works Where Bigger Machines Don't

Doorway access. This is the entire premise. A machine that fits through a standard opening can do interior work; one that doesn't, can't. Measure your typical access and confirm the model's overall width before you buy.

Floor loading. Mini skid steers are dramatically lighter than a CTL, and tracks spread the load. That's what makes working on a slab or a structurally sound floor feasible. Verify operating weight against the floor's rated capacity for anything engineered, elevated, or questionable — this is a genuine structural consideration, not a formality.

Dumpster height. Loading over the wall of a container is a hinge-pin-height question. Standard construction dumpsters are within range for the diesel models; taller roll-offs vary. Check against the containers you actually use.

The grapple bucket. More than any other attachment, this is what makes demo work efficient. Mixed debris — drywall, wood, wire, insulation, broken concrete with rebar — spills out of a plain bucket. A grapple clamps it and it stays.

Which Yellow Jacket Fits Demo Work

YJ1000 — the interior demo machine
25 hp Kubota diesel. Enough capacity for a grapple bucket and loaded debris, small enough for interior access. For most demo and junk removal operations, this is the size.

YJ1200 — more capacity
Wide track and additional lift. Better for exterior demo, heavier debris volume, and commercial work where interior access is less restrictive.

YJ2000 — for heavy demo
50 hp Yanmar diesel. If you're running a breaker through structural concrete regularly or doing production demo, the hydraulic capacity keeps a breaker working all day.

Attachments That Earn Their Keep

Grapple bucket — the hero attachment for this trade. Holds loose material and clamps debris. Buy this before anything else.
Hydraulic breaker — slabs, footings, stem walls. Match both flow and carrier weight rating.
Bucket — bulk debris, dirt, cleanup. Comes standard.
Pallet forks — appliances, furniture, crated material, anything rigid.
Root grapple — exterior debris, brush, and material where you want dirt to fall through.

Universal quick-attach is standard on every Yellow Jacket.

What It Replaces

Bucket-and-wheelbarrow labor. The single largest cost in interior demo. This is where the machine pays for itself, and the savings repeat on every job.

Crew size. Most operations that add a machine either run smaller crews or complete more jobs per week with the same headcount.

Rented equipment. Between day rates and attachment charges, any operation with regular demo volume reaches purchase math in a season or two.

Injury exposure. Manual debris handling is where back injuries and lacerations happen in this trade. That shows up in your comp rate whether or not you count it as an equipment savings.

Turnaround time. Faster cleanout means more jobs and, for junk removal, better scheduling density.

Why Demo Contractors Choose Yellow Jacket

Small enough to get inside, strong enough to load. That combination is the whole category.

Kubota diesel serviced anywhere. Demo is hard on machines; parts availability matters.

Parts stocked in Ohio, shipped same-day. A machine down mid-cleanout holds up a schedule that's usually already tight.

Universal quick-attach standard. Your grapple and breaker fit.

Priced so a machine per crew is realistic.

Demolition & Junk Removal FAQ

Can I run it inside a building?

Physically yes — that's the primary use case. The real consideration is ventilation. Internal combustion engines produce carbon monoxide, and enclosed interior demo work requires adequate air exchange and CO monitoring. This is a genuine safety requirement, not a disclaimer. Many contractors run these machines indoors routinely with proper ventilation planning.

Will it go through the floor?

On a slab-on-grade, no. On elevated or wood-framed floors, that's a real structural question — verify the machine's operating weight plus load against the floor's rated capacity, and involve an engineer if there's any doubt. This is the most important question on this page and it deserves a real answer rather than reassurance.

Will it fit through a standard doorway?

Measure your typical access. This determines whether the machine can do interior work on your jobs at all.

Can it load a roll-off dumpster?

Standard construction containers, yes. Taller roll-offs depend on hinge pin height — check the model spec against the containers you rent. A grapple bucket loads dramatically better than a plain bucket because debris stays clamped on the way up.

What about asbestos, lead, and regulated materials?

Equipment doesn't change your regulatory obligations. Pre-demolition surveys, licensed abatement where required, and proper containment and disposal are governed by federal and state rules regardless of how you're moving the debris. Handle those requirements first; the machine is for the debris that's legal for you to move.

What about silica dust?

Breaking concrete generates respirable crystalline silica, and OSHA's standard applies. Water suppression at the tool and respiratory protection for everyone in the area are required.

Can it handle concrete with rebar?

That's one of the grapple bucket's best applications — rebar-laced slab won't stay in a plain bucket. Expect wear on the lid teeth over time.
