Mini Skid Steers for Fence Installation

Auger post holes instead of digging them. Yellow Jacket mini skid steers for fence installers — Kubota diesel power and hydraulic augers.

Fencing is the trade with the cleanest equipment math in the business. Everything comes back to one number: how many post holes can your crew put in the ground in a day.

Two men with a hand auger get through a certain number, and by mid-afternoon in clay or rocky ground that number drops. A hydraulic auger on a mini skid steer doesn't get tired at two o'clock. Crews that make the switch commonly find the bottleneck moves off hole-digging entirely and onto setting and hanging — which is the productive part of the job.

Yellow Jacket builds that machine on 25 hp Kubota diesel power and it fits through the backyard gate to get to the line.

The Jobs You'll Actually Use It For

  • Augering post holes along the fence line
  • Driving posts with a hydraulic post driver where soil allows
  • Trenching for privacy fence bottom rails and kickboards
  • Digging out old posts and broken concrete footings
  • Hauling posts, panels, and rolls of fabric down the line
  • Moving pallets of block, bagged concrete, and hardware
  • Clearing brush and saplings off the fence line before layout
  • Backfilling and tamping around set posts
  • Grading the line where the ground undulates
  • Hauling out the old fence and debris
  • Loading and unloading material at the shop

The Productivity Math

This is the argument, so let's be specific about how to check it rather than throwing a number at you.

Time your crew on a typical day: count the holes, note the soil, note how many men it took. Then price out what those labor hours cost you. Most fence contractors find that hole-digging is the single largest labor line on the job and the thing that determines how many jobs a week they can run.

A hydraulic auger changes the shape of that day. The machine digs while a crew member sets and plumbs, and the crew works continuously instead of in exhausting bursts. It also means you can bid jobs in rocky or clay soil that you'd previously have priced defensively or walked away from — and those are the jobs with the best margins, because everyone else is pricing them defensively too.

The spec that decides this is auxiliary hydraulic flow, not horsepower. An auger's torque comes from hydraulic flow and pressure, which is why two machines with the same engine can perform very differently in hard ground.

Which Yellow Jacket Fits a Fence Crew

YJ1000 — the fence crew standard
25 hp Kubota D1105 diesel, rubber tracks. Diesel torque and consistent hydraulic flow are exactly what an auger wants. For residential fence work, this is the machine.

YJ2000 — for the hard stuff
50 hp Yanmar diesel. If you're regularly running large-diameter augers, drilling in rock, or installing commercial line posts, the additional hydraulic capacity is what gets you through soil that stops smaller machines.

Attachments That Earn Their Keep in Fencing

Auger — the reason you're buying the machine. Multiple bit diameters to cover residential line posts through commercial corner and gate posts.
Post driver — where soil conditions allow driving instead of setting, this is dramatically faster. Excellent for agricultural and wire fence.
Trencher — bottom rails, kickboards, and running low-voltage or irrigation along the same line.
Pallet forks — panels, block, bagged concrete, hardware.
Bucket — backfill, spoils, general material. Comes standard.
Root grapple — clearing the fence line, hauling out the old fence.

Every Yellow Jacket ships with an industry-standard universal quick-attach plate as standard equipment, so augers and drivers you already own bolt right on.

What It Replaces

Hand and two-man auger labor. This is the whole case. The labor hours you're spending on holes convert directly into either more jobs per week or a smaller crew per job.

Subbed-out drilling. Contractors who sub out hard-soil or large-diameter drilling are paying someone else's margin on their own job. Own the auger and that revenue stays in house.

Rental. Mini skid steer and auger rentals carry a day rate plus attachment charges. A fence contractor with any volume burns through that fast.

Jobs you're not bidding. Rocky and clay-soil work is the highest-margin fence work available, precisely because it's hard. A machine lets you bid it confidently.

Why Fence Contractors Choose Yellow Jacket

Consistent hydraulic flow to the auger. Torque in hard ground comes from hydraulics, not engine badge.

Kubota diesel you can get serviced anywhere. D1105 parts are on the shelf at Kubota dealers and engine shops nationwide. No proprietary components.

Parts stocked in Ohio, shipped same-day. Fence season doesn't pause while you wait on a dealer order.

Universal quick-attach standard. Your existing auger and drive head fit.

Priced so the auger pays for itself in a season. You're buying productivity, not a logo.

Fence Installation FAQ

Will the auger work in rocky soil?

Rock is the hardest test for any auger, and honesty matters more than optimism here. Hydraulic augers handle typical clay, hardpan, and small stone well. Larger rock and ledge will stop any auger in this class — that's a limitation of the tool category, not the brand. For consistently rocky ground, look at the YJ2000 for additional hydraulic capacity, and expect to break out a rock bar occasionally regardless of what you buy.

What auger bit sizes are available?

Match bit diameter to your post size and local code requirements, and check each bit's minimum hydraulic flow requirement against the machine you're specifying.

Can it drive posts instead of setting them in concrete?

With a post driver attachment, yes, where soil conditions allow. Driving is much faster and is standard practice for agricultural, wire, and many wood fence applications. Concrete-set posts are still the norm for gate posts and many residential privacy installs.

Will it fit through a backyard gate?

Usually the deciding question on residential work. Measure your narrowest regular gate and call — we'll tell you which models clear it.

How deep can it drill?

Depth depends on the auger and extension configuration rather than the machine.

Will it damage the customer's lawn running the fence line?

Rubber tracks spread the weight far more than tires, so marking is minimal on normal turf. You're running a line rather than working an area, which limits exposure further.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. See financing options → For most fence contractors, the monthly payment is less than the labor cost the machine displaces in a single week of production.
