Production greenhouse work is bulk material handling in a building that wasn't designed for equipment.
Growing media by the cubic yard. Pots and flats by the pallet. Amendments, compost, and soil in and finished crop out — all through doors and down aisles sized for carts and people, not machines.
A mini skid steer is one of the few machines that physically fits. Whether it's appropriate depends on a question worth taking seriously before anything else.
Ventilation Comes First
Internal combustion engines produce carbon monoxide, and greenhouses are frequently closed up — especially in cold weather, which is exactly when production runs hardest.
Two separate concerns:
Operator safety. CO in an enclosed structure is a genuine hazard, not a caution label. Adequate air exchange and CO monitoring are requirements for any interior engine operation.
Crop effects. Combustion exhaust in an enclosed growing environment can affect sensitive crops. Growers running equipment inside houses generally do so with active ventilation and with attention to which crops are present.
Practical approach for most operations: run the machine for headhouse work, loading and unloading, media handling, and outdoor material movement — and use it inside houses when they're between crops or actively ventilated. That covers most of the heavy handling without putting an engine in a closed house full of finished product.
The Jobs You'll Actually Use It For
- Moving growing media, soil, and amendments in bulk
- Filling benches, beds, and ground beds
- Handling pallets of pots, flats, and trays
- Loading and unloading deliveries
- Moving compost and soil amendments
- Ground bed preparation in production houses
- Crop turnover cleanout and debris removal
- Moving finished product to shipping and staging
- Headhouse material handling
- Gravel and surface maintenance on walks and pads
- Snow around structures and at doors
- Moving equipment, tanks, and supplies
Which Yellow Jacket Fits a Greenhouse
YJ1000 — the general-purpose operation machine
25 hp Kubota D1105 diesel. Handles media volume, headhouse work, and outdoor material handling.
Attachments That Earn Their Keep
Bucket — media, soil, compost, amendments. Comes standard and does the volume work.
Pallet forks — pots, flats, trays, deliveries, finished product.
Angle broom — headhouse floors, walks, and pads. Cleanliness matters in production.
Grapple bucket — crop debris and cleanout between cycles.
Snow blade — clearing around structures and doors.
Universal quick-attach is standard on every Yellow Jacket.
What It Replaces
Wheelbarrow and cart hours on media. Bulk media handling is the largest repetitive material task in production growing.
Manual bench filling. Slow, and it's a labor peak at the start of every cycle.
Seasonal labor. Production peaks are when labor is scarcest and most expensive.
Turnover time between crops. Faster cleanout means faster replanting, which is directly production capacity.
Greenhouse FAQ
Can I run it inside a house?
With adequate ventilation and CO monitoring, and with attention to whether sensitive crops are present. Many operations run equipment in houses between crops or with active ventilation, and use it outdoors and in the headhouse otherwise. Treat ventilation as a requirement rather than a recommendation.
Is there an electric option?
Electric equipment eliminates the exhaust question entirely, which is why it's increasingly common in enclosed growing environments.
Will it fit my aisles?
Measure your narrowest working aisle, lowest door, and any overhead obstruction — heating pipes and irrigation booms are frequently the limiting factor rather than the door.
Will tracks damage my floor?
On gravel, concrete, or ground floors, no. On weed fabric and some floor coverings, counter-rotating will tear it — use wide turns rather than pivots.
Can it fill benches?
With a bucket, depending on bench height and aisle width. Hinge pin height determines whether you can dump over the bench edge. Check the spec against your bench dimensions.
How is this different from a nursery machine?
Similar equipment, different emphasis. Retail garden centers prioritize customer loading and B&B tree handling; production greenhouses prioritize media volume, bench work, and turnover speed. Same machines, different attachment mix.
