A nursery is a material-handling business that happens to sell plants.
Everything on the property is heavy, awkward, and has to move — B&B stock from the field to the holding area, pallets of bagged soil off the delivery truck, bulk mulch into the bins, and a 400-pound root ball into the back of a customer's SUV while they watch.
Some of that happens in greenhouse aisles narrow enough that a tractor is a non-starter. Some of it happens in a retail yard with customers walking around. Both are conditions a mini skid steer suits and larger equipment doesn't.
The Jobs You'll Actually Use It For
- Moving balled-and-burlapped trees and large container stock
- Loading customer vehicles and trailers
- Unloading delivery trucks — bagged goods, pots, hardgoods
- Moving pallets of soil, mulch, fertilizer, and stone
- Handling bulk material into and out of bins
- Working greenhouse and hoop house aisles
- Moving stock between growing areas and retail
- Digging field-grown stock with a tree spade
- Loading and spreading gravel on yard surfaces
- Snow removal on lots and walks through the off-season
- Grading and maintaining yard surfaces and drives
- Setting up and tearing down seasonal displays
- Handling Christmas tree inventory in season
Three Conditions That Shape the Purchase
Aisle and doorway width. Greenhouses and hoop houses have fixed dimensions, and they're often tight. This is the constraint that usually decides which model — measure your narrowest working aisle and lowest doorway before anything else.
Root ball weight. B&B stock is heavier than it looks. A large balled tree can substantially exceed a small machine's rated capacity, and the load sits out in front on forks or a boom, which reduces effective capacity further. Know the sizes you actually handle and spec against the heaviest, not the average.
Retail environment. A garden center yard has customers in it. Visibility, controlled speed, and predictable operation matter in a way they don't on a closed jobsite. This is also a training and policy question — machine operation around the public deserves written procedures.
Which Yellow Jacket Fits a Nursery
YJ1000 — the general-purpose yard machine
25 hp Kubota D1105 diesel. Handles bulk material, deliveries, and most stock movement. The one most operations end up with.
YJ1200 — for field operations
If you're a growing operation rather than primarily retail, and moving significant volume.
Attachments That Earn Their Keep
Pallet forks — the workhorse. Bagged goods, pallets, container stock, deliveries, customer loading.
Bucket — bulk soil, mulch, stone, gravel. Comes standard.
Boom pole / jib — lifting and placing B&B trees by the strap. Reaches over the edge of a truck bed better than forks.
Tree spade — digging and transplanting field stock. Significant investment; worth it for growing operations.
Grapple bucket — pruning debris, cleanup, mixed material.
Angle broom — keeping retail surfaces clean, which matters in a customer-facing yard.
Snow blade or V-plow — off-season lot and walk clearing.
Universal quick-attach is standard on every Yellow Jacket.
What It Replaces
Two-person lifts. Most nursery injuries come from manual handling of heavy, awkward stock. That shows up in comp costs whether or not you attribute it to equipment.
Customer wait time. Loading a large tree quickly and safely is part of the retail experience, especially at spring peak when there's a line.
Seasonal labor. Spring is when you can't find enough people and can least afford to be short. A machine covers work you'd otherwise be hiring for.
A second tractor or forklift. Many operations considering a rough-terrain forklift find a mini skid steer covers most of the same work, fits places the forklift can't, and costs considerably less.
Off-season idle equipment. Snow attachments turn a three-season machine into a four-season one.
Why Nurseries Choose Yellow Jacket
Small enough for greenhouse aisles. The constraint that rules out most alternatives.
Kubota and Yanmar engines serviced anywhere. Seasonal staff, simple platforms, parts available locally.
Parts stocked in Ohio, shipped same-day. Downtime during spring rush is the most expensive downtime you'll have.
Universal quick-attach standard. Forks, bucket, broom — swap in seconds.
Priced so an independent garden center can own one.
Nursery & Garden Center FAQ
Can I run it inside a greenhouse?
Physically yes, and many operations do. The consideration is ventilation — internal combustion engines produce carbon monoxide, and greenhouses are frequently closed up, especially in cold weather. Ensure adequate air exchange, follow the operating manual, and treat it as a real safety item rather than a footnote. Also be aware of exhaust effects on sensitive crops in enclosed conditions.
Will it fit my greenhouse aisles?
Measure your narrowest working aisle and lowest doorway, then call us for the straight answer on which models clear.
How large a B&B tree can it lift?
That's a rated-capacity question, and root balls are heavier than most people estimate. Give us the ball diameters you regularly handle and we'll tell you honestly which model covers it. Remember that a load on forks or a boom sits forward, which reduces effective capacity relative to a bucket load.
Is a tree spade worth it?
For growing operations digging their own field stock, often yes. For retail-only garden centers, rarely — the investment is significant and the utilization is low. Be honest about how many trees you'd actually dig per year.
What about operating around customers?
Worth having a written policy. Controlled speed, defined travel routes, spotters during busy periods, and staff trained not to operate near foot traffic. This is a liability question as much as a safety one, and it's worth addressing before an incident rather than after.
Can it load a customer's pickup?
Yes — that's a routine application. Forks or a boom pole with straps both work. Hinge pin height determines how easily you clear the bed side, so check the spec.
Which model?
The YJ1000 is suited to lighter indoor and intermittent work. Commercial models are the better choice for daily yard work and heavier material handling.
