Mini Skid Steers for Pool Installation

Get spoils out and stone in through a residential gate. Yellow Jacket mini skid steers for pool installation.

Pool jobs have one logistical problem that dominates everything else: an enormous volume of material has to move through a gap beside the house.

Spoils out — a lot of them. Stone, base, and backfill in. Deck material, equipment pads, plumbing, and the shell components. All of it through a side yard that's frequently under eight feet wide, often with a fence, sometimes with an AC unit and a meter in the way.

The excavator digs the hole. Getting everything else in and out is the rest of the job, and it's where the schedule and the labor budget actually go.

The Jobs You'll Actually Use It For

  • Hauling spoils out through side yards and gates
  • Loading spoils into dump trailers and trucks at the curb
  • Hauling gravel, stone, and base material to the excavation
  • Backfilling around the shell or walls
  • Compacting backfill in lifts
  • Moving pool wall panels, steps, and components
  • Hauling and placing deck base material
  • Grading and prepping the deck area
  • Moving bagged material, plumbing, and equipment
  • Setting equipment pads
  • Final grading and yard restoration
  • Removing old decking, concrete, and landscaping on renovations

The Spoils Problem

Worth being specific, because it's the reason pool contractors buy these machines.

A pool excavation generates a substantial volume of soil, and on a residential job there's usually nowhere to put it. It has to travel from the backyard, through a narrow side yard, to a truck or trailer parked at the street — repeatedly, all day.

Doing that with wheelbarrows is days of labor. Doing it with a machine that fits the side yard turns it into hours. That single task frequently justifies the equipment on its own, before you count the stone, the backfill, and the restoration.

The same constraint applies in reverse for everything coming in.

Gate and side-yard clearance is therefore the specification that matters most for this trade. Measure your narrowest regular access before choosing a model.

Which Yellow Jacket Fits Pool Work

YJ1000 — the access machine
25 hp Kubota diesel. Enough capacity to move material efficiently while staying narrow enough for typical residential side yards. For most residential pool builders, this is the size.

YJ1200 — wide track, more capacity
More material per cycle and better stability on torn-up ground. Choose this where access allows and volume matters more than width.

YJ2000 — for heavy work and renovations
50 hp Yanmar diesel. Worth it if you're running a breaker on demolition and renovation work, or handling commercial-scale projects.

Attachments That Earn Their Keep

Bucket — spoils out, stone in. This is most of the work. Comes standard.
Pallet forks — wall panels, steps, bagged material, equipment, deck material.
Plate compactor — backfill compaction in lifts, and deck base. Critical for avoiding settlement.
Leveler — deck base grading to consistent depth.
Grapple bucket — old concrete, decking, and landscaping on renovation jobs.
Harley rake — yard restoration and seedbed prep.
Hydraulic breaker — old deck and coping removal on renovations.

Universal quick-attach is standard on every Yellow Jacket.

What It Replaces

Wheelbarrow labor on spoils and stone. The largest labor line on the job.

Crew time on the schedule. Pool jobs are sequenced tight — excavation, plumbing, shell, backfill, deck, inspection. Material handling delays push everything.

Rental. Across a multi-week install, rental cost on a single job is significant. Builders running any volume reach purchase math quickly.

Lawn and hardscape repair. Tracks across a side yard leave far less damage than tires or repeated wheelbarrow traffic on the same path. The homeowner's yard is part of what you're being judged on.

Subcontracted haul-off. Being able to load your own trailer on your own schedule.

Why Pool Builders Choose Yellow Jacket

Sized for residential side-yard access. That's the constraint the whole trade works around.

Kubota diesel torque. Loaded buckets, uphill, on soft dirt — repeatedly.

Parts stocked in Ohio, shipped same-day. Pool season is compressed and every day of delay pushes an install schedule.

Universal quick-attach standard. Your compactor and forks fit.

Priced so a machine per crew is realistic.

Pool Installation FAQ

Can it dig the pool?

No — that's excavator work, and we'd rather say so plainly. Depth, reach, and volume put pool excavation well outside this machine class. The mini is the material-handling machine: spoils out, stone in, backfill, compaction, and restoration. That's where most of the labor is.

Will it fit through a residential gate?

The question that determines everything on this job type. Measure your narrowest regular side-yard access — including gate posts, AC units, and meters — and call us. We'll tell you which models clear it.

How much spoil can it move?

Depends on bucket size, haul distance, and ground conditions. What builders consistently report is that spoils removal stops being the thing that sets the schedule.

Will it damage the customer's lawn getting to the backyard?

Substantially less than tires or repeated wheelbarrow traffic. Rubber tracks spread the weight, so you're leaving marks rather than ruts. On the same route repeatedly, mats or plywood are still worth laying down — you'll be traveling that path dozens of times.

Can it handle backfill compaction?

With a plate compactor attachment, yes, and it reaches into areas along the wall that a walk-behind can't work efficiently. Compaction in proper lifts is what prevents settlement and deck cracking later, so it's worth doing right rather than fast.

Can it move pool wall panels?

Panels and steps generally, with forks — but check specific component weights against the machine's rated capacity. Some assemblies are heavier than they look.

What about renovations and old deck removal?

That's a strong application. A breaker handles old coping and deck concrete, and a grapple bucket loads the debris. On renovation work the machine often earns more than on new installs.
