Mini Skid Steers for School & Campus Grounds Crews

Clear campus walks and maintain fields with one machine, year-round. Yellow Jacket mini skid steers for school and university grounds departments.

Campus grounds departments have a workload shaped by the academic calendar and a liability profile shaped by sidewalks.

Winter is walks. Miles of them, connecting buildings, and every one of them is a route students use between classes on a schedule they can't change. Slip-and-fall exposure on a campus is one of the larger premises liabilities an institution carries, and clearing reliably before the first class period is the direct mitigation.

Summer is projects. The window when you can actually work on fields, drainage, and grounds without students in the way. It's short and everything competes for it.

One machine covers both.

The Jobs You'll Actually Use It For

Winter

  • Sidewalk and walkway clearing across campus
  • Building entrances and ADA routes
  • Clearing around hydrants, meters, and utility access
  • Salt and sand spreading
  • Snow stacking and relocation in tight lots
  • Cleaning up plow windrows at crossings

Athletic & Grounds

  • Infield mix and warning track maintenance
  • Field renovation and drainage repair
  • Goalmouth and high-wear area repair
  • Sod handling and turf restoration
  • Mulch distribution across campus beds
  • Tree planting and removal, storm cleanup

Facilities & Operations

  • Moving materials between buildings
  • Loading dock support where there's no forklift
  • Event setup and teardown — graduation, athletics, orientation
  • Playground and recreation surfacing material
  • Summer renovation project material handling
  • Drainage and erosion repair

The Case That Gets Approved

Campus purchases get justified on utilization and risk, not payback period.

Utilization across departments. Grounds, athletics, and facilities all have work for it. A machine with a full attachment set isn't one tool — it's the tool for eight different jobs across three departments, in all four seasons. That's the argument that survives a budget review.

Sidewalk liability. This is the one that lands with risk management and finance. Reliable, timely clearing of pedestrian routes is the primary control for the most common premises claim an institution faces. Frame the purchase as risk mitigation and it competes differently than if it's framed as a grounds convenience.

Summer project capacity. Work you currently contract out because the window is too short to do in-house.

Which Yellow Jacket Fits a Campus

YJ1000 — the general-purpose campus machine
25 hp Kubota diesel. Narrow enough for sidewalk routes, capable enough for fields and grounds.

YJ1200 — wide track, more capacity
Better for athletic field work and heavier material handling, with lower ground pressure on turf.

Attachments That Earn Their Keep

V-plow — the primary winter tool for walks and tight areas.
Angle broom — light snow, cleanup, and gentler on decorative paving than a blade.
Salt & sand spreader — de-icing on the same pass.
Bucket — mulch, infield mix, topsoil, material. Comes standard.
Pallet forks — deliveries, event setup, facilities work.
Harley rake — field renovation and turf restoration.
Grapple bucket — storm debris and cleanup.

Universal quick-attach is standard on every Yellow Jacket.

Operating Around Students

Worth written policy rather than improvisation. Campuses have pedestrian traffic that doesn't watch for equipment, and clearing operations frequently happen before dawn when visibility is poor.

Practical items: defined travel routes, restricted operating hours near residence halls, high-visibility lighting, and a policy that operators stop rather than work around pedestrians. Most institutions already have a grounds equipment policy — this fits into it.

Schools & Universities FAQ

Can you respond to a formal bid?

Yes. Send the specification and we'll respond. If you're writing the spec, we can help identify what's meaningful to specify — flow rates, capacities, dimensions — versus what just narrows the field.

Will it fit our sidewalk routes?

Campus walk widths vary, and the pinch points are usually bollards, gates, and stair landings rather than the walk itself. Measure your narrowest route and call us.

Can we use it on athletic fields?

Yes, within limits. Ground pressure determines turf impact, so ask for PSI when comparing machines. Stay off saturated fields and train operators to avoid pivot turns — that's what scuffs turf regardless of machine weight.

Multiple operators across departments — is that a problem?

It's the most common source of equipment damage on campuses. Designated trained operators rather than "whoever's available," plus written procedures, is worth the administrative effort.

Is there a cab for winter operation?

Pre-dawn winter clearing is a real staffing consideration.

What's the lead time?

Machines are in stock and ship from Ohio — useful against a fiscal year deadline or a summer project window.
