Mini Skid Steers for Sod Installation

Get pallets to the work and grade prep right before the sod dries out. Yellow Jacket mini skid steers for sod installers.

Sod is the only landscape material on a clock.

It comes off the truck already cut, already stressed, and already losing quality. In summer heat you have hours, not days, before it starts going. Which means the job isn't really about laying sod — it's about how fast you can prep the grade and get pallets to where the crew is working.

Both of those are material-handling problems, and both are what a mini skid steer solves.

The Jobs You'll Actually Use It For

  • Moving pallets from the delivery point to the work area
  • Staging pallets ahead of the crew as they lay
  • Hauling and spreading topsoil
  • Final grade preparation and seedbed work
  • Stripping existing turf on renovation jobs
  • Hauling out old sod, debris, and spoils
  • Spreading soil amendments and starter fertilizer
  • Rolling installed sod
  • Grading and shaping swales before installation
  • Cleanup and site restoration
  • Loading and unloading at the yard

Straight Talk About Pallet Weight

This one matters, so here's the honest version rather than the sales version.

A pallet of sod commonly runs 2,000 to 3,000 lb, and heavier when it's been rained on or freshly cut. That's above the rated operating capacity of every mini skid steer in this class — ours, and everyone else's. Any manufacturer implying they'll lift a full pallet is quoting you a number, not a machine.

What crews actually do is move partial pallets — taking half or a third at a time with forks — or use the machine to stage full pallets short distances with careful technique on level ground, which is a judgment call and not something to do routinely.

That's still dramatically faster than hand-carrying rolls or slabs across a yard, and it's why the partial-pallet workflow is standard practice on sod jobs.

If moving full pallets intact is a hard requirement, you need a compact track loader or a rough-terrain forklift, and we'd rather tell you that.

Grade Prep Is Where the Job Is Won

The part of a sod job that determines the finished result isn't the laying — it's what's underneath.

Uneven grade shows through sod immediately and permanently. Low spots hold water. High spots scalp on the first mow. Hand-raking a large area to consistent grade is slow, and consistency degrades as the crew gets tired.

A harley rake or soil conditioner does that work faster and flatter than a crew with rakes, which improves the finished product and cuts the prep time that's competing with the sod's shelf life. On most jobs this is the attachment that changes the outcome more than the pallet handling does.

Which Yellow Jacket Fits a Sod Crew

YJ1000 — the sod installation machine
25 hp Kubota diesel with enough capacity to make partial-pallet handling efficient. For most installers this is the right size.

YJ1200 — wide track, more capacity
Additional lift for pallet work and better stability carrying loads across soft, freshly prepped ground.

Attachments That Earn Their Keep

Harley rake — final grade and seedbed prep. The attachment that most affects the finished job.
Pallet forks — pallet staging and movement.
Bucket — topsoil, amendments, debris. Comes standard.
Leveler — spreading topsoil to consistent depth.
Grapple bucket — stripped sod and debris on renovation jobs.
Roller — rolling installed sod.

Universal quick-attach is standard on every Yellow Jacket.

What It Replaces

Hand-carrying sod across the site. The most physically punishing work in landscaping, and the reason sod crews are hard to keep.

Hand-raking grade prep. Slower and less consistent than a machine, and it's on the critical path against the sod's shelf life.

Product loss. Sod that sits too long is sod you're either laying in poor condition or eating the cost of. Faster material handling means less waste on hot days.

Crew size. Most installers who add a machine either run smaller crews or complete more square footage per day with the same headcount.

Callbacks on uneven grade. The problem you can't fix after the sod is down without pulling it back up.

Why Sod Installers Choose Yellow Jacket

Diesel torque on soft, freshly prepped ground — loaded, uphill, on loose soil.

Low ground pressure so you're not rutting the base you just graded.

Parts stocked in Ohio, shipped same-day. Install season is short and a delivered load of sod doesn't wait.

Universal quick-attach standard. Your rake and forks fit.

Priced so a one-crew operation can own one.

Sod Installation FAQ

Can it lift a full pallet of sod?

No, and neither can any other mini skid steer in this class. Pallets commonly run 2,000–3,000 lb, above rated capacity across the category. Crews move partial pallets, which is still far faster than carrying by hand. If full-pallet handling is essential, you need a larger machine.

How much does a pallet of sod actually weigh?

It varies with slab size, soil moisture, and cut thickness — and it goes up significantly after rain. Weigh a typical delivery if you're specifying a machine around it, rather than relying on a supplier's nominal figure.

Will it rut the prepared grade?

Tracks spread the weight well, but freshly prepped soil is soft by definition. Plan travel routes, minimize repeat passes over the same line, and do final grade in the areas you've been driving on last. Some marking is unavoidable; the question is whether it's correctable before sod goes down.

How much better is a harley rake than hand raking?

Meaningfully — both in speed and in consistency, which is the part that shows in the finished lawn. On larger jobs it's usually the difference between prepping and laying in one day versus two.

Can it strip old sod on renovations?

It'll handle debris and haul-off well. For clean stripping of existing turf, a dedicated sod cutter does a better job — the machine is what moves the stripped material and preps the new grade.

Will it fit through a residential gate?

Backyard sod jobs live or die on gate access. Measure your narrowest typical gate and call us for the straight answer on which models clear.
